“The release of my life” – Tom DeLonge

It’s a little more than a week until ANGELS & AIRWAVES release their third full-length, Love, on Sunday, Feb. 14 (for free, natch). The album will also be accompanied by a film that will see a theatrical release later this year, plus a deluxe edition of the disc for purchase. We did a quick check-in with AVA frontman TOM DeLONGE to see what all the Angels & Airwaves attention means for new BLINK-182 music. –Rachel Lux

“Blink are in the process of scheduling how we are going to record the next record. We already started before the tour, the only issue we’re having now is that Angels are having quite a lot of electricity being built, so we have kind of the release of our life, and with this film and everything, we’re just trying to schedule how we’re going to be able to be in the studio. That meeting was actually supposed to take place last week and then this week, but this week already came to a close, so it’s hard because we’re all so busy.

Mark [Hoppus] is actually doing a remix for Angels & Airwaves that will be on the sellable version of [Love]. We have a record that we’re selling that has 30 minutes extra music on it, plus a remix from Mark. Travis [Barker] has got a million things going on as well, so we’re focusing on that and this week kind of went out the window. But I’m gearing up for tour, so the goal is that we’re going to be meeting once or twice a week up until when I leave, and then when I get back from tour, it’ll open the window up to really dig into it.

We actually got a lot done quickly [on the new Blink album] because people were working simultaneously in different studios, so we’re hoping it will go really quickly. I’m in a good spot, because I have two great bands. I know how people are with Blink. I know how big Blink are and I know the legacy with it and everything, but Angels & Airwaves, to my heart and to the people who like it, this is the release of my life. This is the most complicated and all-encompassing and heartfelt project–this album and this movie–that I’ve ever done in my entire life. It’s really, really exciting because it really exceeded my expectations. I thought it was going to suffer to some degree because I was getting thrown around with the other band as well, and the tour or whatever, but I’m really, really, really excited about [the album release on] Valentine’s Day. One step at a time for me–it’s hard for me to bounce back and forth, and right now my mind is all Angels and trying to figure out how to schedule the upcoming Blink recording, because that’s coming quick, too.” alt

LOVE Will Be Released Two Days Early On Fuel.TV!

From Fuel.TV

Angels & Airwaves is the brainchild of Tom DeLonge, which came to fruition during the extended hiatus of blink-182. With aspirations to transcend the limitations of the pop-punk genre, AVA released their debut album “We Don’t Need to Whisper” in 2006. The band’s new album, “Love”, is scheduled to drop on 02/14/10… but FUEL.TV giving away the entire album for FREE, two days early.

Travis Barker ‘Can’t Wait’ To Record New Blink-182

From MTV

‘We’re about to start working on it,’ drummer says of new LP.

Travis Barker has heard what both of his Blink-182 bandmates have had to say about the status of the group’s much-anticipated new album … that it would be coming out in 2011 or, alternatively, that it would be coming out much sooner. And now, he’s wading into the fray.

When MTV News caught up with Barker backstage at the Grammy Awards on Sunday — minutes after he rocked the stage with Lil Wayne, Eminem and Drake — we asked him for an update on Blink’s follow-up to their self-titled 2003 effort. And, from the sound of things, it’s gonna be a long year for Blink fans.

“We’re about to start working on it. I’m gonna try to wrap up my album and, uh, Tom has his band, he’s wrapping up that album, and then we’ll start working on a Blink record,” Barker said. “We go to Europe in August for all the festivals … we do, like, six weeks out there, and then our album will come out probably early next year.”

A spokesperson for Blink-182’s label Interscope did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment at press time.

So while the band seems to be following bassist Mark Hoppus’ plan of “just getting back in the studio and do what we do,” the fruits of that plan might not be heard for a while. But Barker maintains that a new Blink record is still very much the top priority for all three men, especially after they passed their first test — a high-profile reunion tour — with flying colors.

“This summer was the test, and we got out there, and it was the best time I’ve had playing with those two dudes in my life,” Barker said. “It felt even better than old times, so I can’t wait to do an album together again.

Mark Hoppus Promises ‘Weird’ New Blink-182 Album

Read article on MTV.

Mark Hoppus has heard all the talk about the Blink-182 album not coming out until 2011, and he’s determined not to let that happen. It all started earlier this week, when he tweeted, “2011 is too far away. Gonna do all I can to have a Blink-182 album in 2010.” And when MTV News caught up with him Thursday night in Los Angeles, he laid out how he plans to finish the album, which has been in the works for more than a year now. As it turns out, the first step is just getting everyone together in the same room.

Article: Angels & Airwaves plans free digital album release

From Reuters.com

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – Blink-182 guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge is taking a break from major-label life with the release of the forthcoming album by his other band, Angels & Airwaves. The group’s third studio album, “Love,” will arrive February 14 as a free digital download.

DeLonge and Angels & Airwaves manager Rick DeVoe agree that self-releasing the 10-song set is a financial risk, especially with DeLonge spending up to $500,000 of his own money to fund the process. But the artist hopes to recoup through corporate sponsorships, touring, merchandise sales, premium exclusive tracks and videos on the band’s Web site and by selling a deluxe version of “Love” with 30 minutes of exclusive bonus material.

“We’re redefining the music business,” says DeLonge, who finished a reunion tour last fall with Blink-182. “And I honestly think we’re going to be 10 times bigger because of it.”

Angels & Airwaves’ past two albums — “We Don’t Need to Whisper” (2006) and “I-Empire” (2007), which have sold 571,000 copies and 268,000 copies in the United States, respectively, according to Nielsen SoundScan — were released on Geffen.

DeLonge initially approached the label with the idea of releasing the album for free. But “there are certain costs they couldn’t throw under the rug,” he says. After failed negotiations, Geffen agreed to allow Angels & Airwaves to self-release “Love.”

“When you sign with a label early in your career, it’s because they have the advantage of investing in your brand,” DeLonge says, noting that he owns the masters and publishing rights for “Love.” “Now it’s changed, because the majority of the kids now get their records for free (and) the labels don’t have money to invest.”

MULTIMEDIA PROJECT

“Love” will be available as a free download on Angels & Airwaves’ Web site, and a deluxe version of the album will be sold at stores and digital retailers, including iTunes, for about $5-$10. A final release date for the deluxe version hasn’t been set.

Additionally, a feature film titled “Love” will hit select theaters later in the year, according to DeLonge. The music from “Love” will serve as the soundtrack to the film, which centers on an astronaut who is stranded in a space station as the Earth collapses.

To help market and promote the album, Angels & Airwaves partnered with Live Nation, Fuel TV and Hurley, among others, to feature the download link on their Web sites and send e-mail blasts to their customer databases. The combined lists will reach about 55 million people, according to DeLonge.

DeLonge hopes to distribute at least 20 million downloads of the free album. His intention is to expose Angels & Airwaves’ music to as many people as possible, with the idea that those new fans will return to the band’s Modlife-powered Web site and buy merchandise or sign up for a premium membership, which costs $6.95 per month and gives access to advance ticketing and digital content.

“If only 5 percent of that 20 million came back and interacted with the Modlife platform that powers our Web site, the revenue would far exceed anything we’d make from a major label, in any way, shape or form,” DeLonge says. “I believe that music would be like a business card that you pass out, and if people like it, they come back and buy a number of things from your band.”

So far Fuel TV is the sole sponsor of Angels & Airwaves’ spring tour, which will visit 1,300- to 6,000-capacity venues in North America; DeLonge says the band is still negotiating with other companies for sponsorship. He believes the free album will lure fans to the show. “We’ve decided to basically give up the fact that we’re going to sell albums and hope we’re going to get it on the ticket side,” he says.

Meanwhile, DeLonge says that Blink-182 is planning to record its new album soon and is talking with its label, Interscope, about a 2011 release. The group also intends to play European festival dates this summer.
