I'd HIGHLY recommend it, download it, look on the tutorials on the official forum, and follow them to the word the first time round, then go nuts with your own pictures.

Add a new layer and place whatever image you want at the front on this new layer (it should be placed on top of the current image).

I added a new layer when I pasted the love logo, and that's why its over it and I could of moved it freely without ruining the picture below.

Did you download the feather add-on?
When you make a render (cut someone out) it's always best to feather them a bit, here's a quick one with true feather levels 5-2.

(Without the .pdn file I couldn't do it too great, I think the levels are a bit high - his bass is a bit too skinny now) but do you see the difference? How the kind've jaggedness has gone away all around his top half and the line? It just makes the outter edges a bit more transparent and blur into the background. If you do this correctly on the individual layer/object you'd be able to put it on anything without it looking wrong/out of place. Deffo something you should look in to.

EDIT 2: Eughh. I had another less effective method using preset tools but the more I looked at it the more I hated. Deleted second method. Post's less long now :) Hope it helps :)

Additional: The above method should've worked for your "poor pic I did for msn" pic. If you'd took their layer, did your dotty background, put them on the above layer and feathered the shit out of them they'd overlay perfectly.
And that AvA pic you did a while back, the one you said you didn't realise how bad it was? Yeah, it looks epic. I love the sky you've put on it with all the colours. Maybe when it's your background it looks shit just becasue it's being all stretched outta shape but there? It's great. :)

Okay so I'm not sure how detailed you want it?
Ill treat you like you're not a retard and do it so you can play around with it and make it your own.

Easiest way would be to start with a black canvas.
Goto Effects>Noise>Add Noise. Colour Saturation at 0 but play with intensity and coverage 'till you have it how you like it and BOOM. Pretty decent stars already.
If you want more depth to it? Add another layer, repeat above, add some gaussian blur (a little's enough ;)) and change the layer settings to Glow - lower opacity. When you're happy, flatten it all down.

Now I'm gunna chat completely out of my arse and work this out as I go along to try to copy your stolen pic :D

So new layer, set colours to black and transparent (on your colours window set primary is Black, for Secondary click More and lower Transparency Alpha to 0) then add some clouds - Effects>Render>Clouds.
Here I'm playing around now. I've got it set to 300 - 65 and keep adding new layers and repeating clouds (Ctrl+F) and playing with the layer settings. Leave your first layer of clouds as is then play with the others. Colour Dodge seems to work best so far (with a lowered opacity) and an extra layer on top set to Multiply, but as I said; play around.
Now I'm really playing.
Add a new layer, get out your paintbrush and go Crazy! Start big, one colour. Go smaller for the next. Add some Gaussian blur (around 35) rinse and repeat. I got about 4/5 colours in here and my smallest blob looks sweet. The middle where I went really crazy? Looks pretty shit so far. I'll improve.
I cut the bit I liked (my little one) and moved her to a new layer, then on the big blob, just blur the cluck out of it :D I also lowered the opacity on it to make it blend better.
Here, I went back to my original cloud layer (the thickest clouds) and lowered the opacity to 70 :)
I've gone back to my big bulge and used a tool I had called Dents (Effects>Distort>Dents)with all the settings in details and width at default, edge behaviour set to clamp and all the general settings lowered a bit.
Now I've gtg :/ And I just realised, it looks NOTHING like yours, but I like where it's heading and you might too? So I'll quickly add the logo (I took http://images.fanpop.com/images/image_uploads/Angels-and-Airwaves-angels-and-airwaves-772406_800_600.jpg circular selected the ava, upped the contrast to 40 and set layer blend to additive, lowered opacity and true feathered by about 18. I then just wrote Angels and Airwaves cause I have the font :D Then duplicated it and added glow to bottom layer, flattened and hosted as is, despite it not looking too great yet.

:D Then I went to turn the water mains on and jumped in the shower :D
